Who are we?
Based in South Africa, the RESET Collective is a new royalty‑collecting society for online music rights,
driven and defined by us, the people who make the music. We are songwriters, lyricists, composers and beatmakers,
and we need a society that works — across all streams, on every platform, everywhere.
What are online rights?
Online rights are what streaming platforms must license from music publishers and from different music rights societies
in order to make music available for their subscribers to stream.
- First they need what's called the
mechanical right, which they license from music publishers and from mechanical rights societies like CAPASSO.
- And second they need the performing right which they license from performing rights societies such as SAMRO.
Composers always own their share of performing rights separately, and even their publisher can't license or collect it for them.
As RESET, we license those rights on behalf of our members and collect and distribute the royalties that accrue.
How do we collect?
We've partnered with an international service to collect our members' online royalties directly from the streaming platforms
themselves. This gives us access to streams througout the African continent, but unlike SAMRO or CAPASSO, we also collect for streams in major markets throughout the rest of the world.
And with our partner's industry-leading data matching capabilities and optimized timeframes, we collect more
and distribute it faster.
What about SAMRO and CAPASSO?
If you’re a member of SAMRO, they do a solid job handling offline performing rights — radio and TV broadcasts, live shows at venues, and music in retail spaces. They also collect some online rights, but only for limited platforms and territories, and in our experience that’s not their strongest area.
Our recommendation: keep your SAMRO membership for offline rights, and switch to RESET for online rights. We cover a far wider range of platforms and territories worldwide, ensuring your digital royalties don’t slip through the cracks. If you’re a member of CAPASSO, they manage mechanical rights (something we don’t handle).
So if you're already a member of CAPASSO, keep that membership alongside RESET — it’s the best way to ensure all your rights are fully covered.
